  高考英语阅读强化练习原文

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four outof five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-heldimage(形象)of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is moreharmonious than it has ever been in the past."We were surprised by just how positive today'syoung people seem to be about their families," said one member of the research team. "They'reexpected to be rebellious(叛逆的)and selfish, but actually they have other things on their minds:they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There's more negotiation(商议)and discussion between parents and children, and childrenexpect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don't want to rock the boat."

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago totreat their children as friends."My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing tolisten to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. "I always tell them when I'm going out clubbing. As long as they know what I'm doing, they're fine with it." Susan Crome, who is now 21,agrees. "Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I'd done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But Ithink my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that."

Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea ofteenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments,"Our surprise thatteenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in oursocial history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling andbreaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s wheneveryone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change fromhelping out with the family business to taking it over."

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways:they provide him wood and otherproducts;they give him shade;and they help to prevent drought(干旱)and floods.

Unfortunately,in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these servicesis the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees,he has cut themdown in large numbers Two thousand years ago,a rich and powerful country cut down its treesto build warships, with which to gain itself an empire It gained the empire but, without itstrees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itselffaced by floods and starvation.

Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees,it is difficultsometimes to make the people realize this. They cut down the trees but are too careless toplant and look after new trees So,unless the government has a good system of control, orcan educate the people, the forests slowly disappear

This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious:forwhere there are trees, their roots break the soil up,allowing the rain to sink in, and also bindthe soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, therainfalls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the raincarries away the rich topsoil in which crops grow When a11 the topsoil is gone.nothingremains but worthless desert.
